Mark Tallon graduated from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Trinity College Dublin in 2002. Following placements with Continental AG in Germany and Bus Eireann, he began a Masters Degree at UCD in September 2003. Mark acted as the Engine and Drivetrain Team Leader in the UCD Racing Formula Student Team during the design and building of UCD-R4, and continues this role during the testing of R4. Mark has also been an active member of the UCD-R6 Engine and Drivetrain Team.
The research project being undertaken by Mark for his M.Eng.Sc., concerns unsteady modelling of the airflow within the intake system of the Formula Student car’s engine. The aim of the project is to model this airflow using 3D CFD, while modelling the rest of the engine’s components within a 1D code. To achieve this, the 3D CFD package, Fluent, will be coupled to the Virtual Engines 1D code produced by Optimum Power. By doing this, Virtual Engines will provide unsteady boundary conditions to the Fluent simulation, thus allowing it to more accurately model the 3D flow within the intake system.
